Linguistics, Chinese Communities, and Transnational Landscapes - Interdisciplinary Research Workshop 1
This lecture offers an overview of the Chinese linguistic system by contrasting its ‘apparent’ structural simplicity with the inherent complexities including the tonal and writing systems. We explore the iconicity of Chinese characters and examine how global shifts and technological advancements reshape contemporary Chinese scripts seen in public spaces. Shifting from macro- sociolinguistic pluralism to micro-interactional data, the session concludes by analyzing how contextual nuances influence discourses, using research data from various Chinese communities.
