Strategies

Many tongues, one common language: Knowledge
Research

In our Department, research speaks many languages, embraces many cultures, and values every difference as a driver of growth and innovation.

The Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures is a national and international hub for the study of world languages, literatures, and cultures. Multilingualism (Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, English, Spanish-American, Italian, Russian, Spanish, German, and, in the near future, new languages such as Korean, Icelandic, and Portuguese), multiculturalism, and trans-scalar connections form the pillars of its academic identity.

Thanks to its openness to scientific and cultural exchange, the Department fosters innovative, interdisciplinary research—closely intertwined with teaching and knowledge dissemination—across multiple areas of the humanities. It engages with the global challenges of our time: linguistic mobility, cultural diversity, international communication, globalisation, local cultures and community dynamics, digital technologies for languages, and mapping for socio-territorial development and cultural heritage enhancement.

Its mission is to promote innovative, interdisciplinary, and inclusive research that values cultural diversity and dialogue across disciplines.

The Department is committed to building an open, dynamic, and welcoming scholarly community, where every voice and perspective contributes to cultural innovation and the creation of shared knowledge.

Recognised as a Department of Excellence (2018–2022) by the Ministry of University and Research, the Department is distinguished by a strong international profile deeply connected to local dynamics, with a constant attention to scientific quality, collaborative research, and advanced training for new generations of scholars.

The Department maintains long-term collaborations with institutions and research centres across Europe and beyond, encouraging academic mobility and joint participation in international research projects.
