Welcome to the Department of Excellence publication archive
Publications

This section contains the publications of the Department of Excellence in Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures for the five-year period 2018-2022. This list is constantly being updated.

The result of the rich and detailed research conducted by the members of the Department of Excellence in Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the fields of literary, linguistic, philological and foreign language sciences, as well as history, geography and anthropology, with a variety of interdisciplinary, interlinguistic, intersemiotic and intercultural styles and perspectives, the publications are backed by the scientific activities related to our 2018-2022 Project of Excellence.

The result of methodological sensitivities that proactively respond to the stimuli of a cultural system that demands new skills (new technologies first and foremost), and confronted with the speed of the dynamics at work and the need to bring knowledge to a new marketability, the publications of the Department of Excellence are designed as a place where critical, creative and ideational instances mix, to foster more articulated and complex forms of knowledge.

The publications of excellence thus highlight the innovative vocation of the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and are the product of research, studies and scientific opportunities open to technological change and to the non-university, social and cultural context. They are perceived in the perspective of humanistic studies that aim to understand and face the new challenges of knowledge, and to work with the methodological tools and skills of the linguistic, literary, cultural and philological sphere.

What are our Department-of-Excellence publications about?
Publications of excellence

The publications of excellence of the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures are presented here within the two areas of excellence:

  • Digital Humanities
  • Specialised and Literary Translation Studies

They therefore represent our Department's contribution to the national and international scientific community on the two themes of the project, in their complex articulations. But also and above all in their multiple intersections: the potential arising from the interaction between Digital Humanities and Literary and Specialised Translation Studies makes our project particularly original and innovative on the Italian scene.

Digital Humanities

Publications on the Digital Humanities bring together, in particular, volumes, essays and journal articles that discuss the following topics and research methods in a focused, transdisciplinary, transmedia and cross-cultural manner:

  • Digital Humanities and Corpus Linguistics: these are studies that, by making use of sophisticated IT tools (e.g. linguistic analysis software, digital archives and crowdsourced resources of various and wide-ranging nature) open up multiple directions of quanti-qualitative and synchro-diachronic research on languages, also from an interlinguistic and intercultural perspective
  • Multimodal and sociosemiotic analysis: by developing innovative comparative and functional analysis methodologies, including through the use of eye-tracking technologies and biometric analysis, these studies investigate the complex relationships between different sign systems and socio-communicative contexts in contemporary culture
  • Specialised languages (Languages for Specialised Purposes): these studies apply sophisticated IT tools, such as analysis software, archives, corpora and innovative digital resources, to the critical and socio-contextual investigation of specialised and professionalised languages and discourses and their most salient features
Studies on Specialised and Literary Translation

The publications in Specialised and Literary Translation Studies comprise volumes, essays and journal articles that specifically deal with the following topics and research methods, always in a deliberately transdisciplinary, transmedia and intercultural key:

  • Translation and Post-Translation Studies: these are contributions that, by further studying the lesson of Translation and Post-Translation Studies, question the translation process (not only in terms of outcomes, but also in terms of tools) in its broadest critical-interpretive, linguistic and textual, philological and cultural-historical aspects
  • Translation and Post-Translation Studies: again in the vein of Translation and Post-Translation Studies, the works collected here investigate more closely the linguistic, cultural, philosophical, philosophical and aesthetic-imaginative specificity of the literary text and its codes, also thanks to the elaboration of sophisticated hermeneutic tools for cognitive and metacognitive, transnational and global reading of textuality and the world
  • Transcoding and transmediality: focusing on the specificity of intersemiotic translation as an engine of multiculturalism in the present, these studies analyse the process of encoding, decoding and recoding of various forms of textuality across different media, and different linguistic-cultural and representational systems
In dialogue with the non-academic present

The publications of excellence of the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures are therefore under the banner of a constant confrontation with the non-academic world, and with the challenges posed by today's central productive and symbolic spheres such as the specialised professions, the interfaces between industrial production and communicative, creative, artistic and media aspects, the organisation of cultural events, etc. All areas of the contemporary that require critical, analytical, philological, cultural and translation skills necessarily nourished by an awareness that is as clear, robust and thorough as possible.

Enjoy reading them!
